Comprehensive Policy

Student Appearance & Personal Grooming Guidelines

Silverdale School Lagos maintains high standards of presentation, discipline, and personal care. Please review our detailed grooming and uniform policies below.

General Appearance

All students are expected to maintain a neat, clean, modest, well-groomed and presentable appearance at all times while on school premises or representing the school.
Wear the correct school uniform for each day.
Ensure uniforms are clean, properly ironed and in good condition.
Wear the correct size of uniform—not excessively tight, loose or short.
Keep shoes clean and properly maintained.
Maintain good personal hygiene, including regular bathing, use of deodorant and clean clothing.
Keep their overall appearance consistent with the values and image of Silverdale School Lagos.

Hair Guidelines

Boys

Hair must be low-cut, neat and well-groomed.
Hair should not cover the ears, eyebrows or neck excessively.
No dreadlocks, braids, twists, locs or elaborate hairstyles.
No hair designs, patterns, carvings or artistic cuts.
No bleaching, colouring or unnatural hair colours.
Hair must be maintained regularly and should not appear overgrown.
Sideburns must be neat and moderate.
Students must not wear hair extensions or attachments.

Girls

Hair must be neat, simple and school-appropriate.
Braids, cornrows and other protective hairstyles may be permitted where they are neat and moderate.
Hair extensions should be in natural colours, preferably black or dark brown.
Extremely long, oversized or elaborate hairstyles are not permitted.
Hair accessories should be simple and preferably in school colours.
No brightly coloured extensions, beads or decorative attachments.
Hair must not obstruct the student’s face or interfere with school activities.
Students must avoid hairstyles that require excessive maintenance during school hours.

Facial Hair

For male students: Beards and moustaches are not permitted.
Students are expected to maintain a clean-shaven appearance.
Facial hair should not be allowed to grow out during the school term.

Make-up & Cosmetics

Students are expected to maintain a natural appearance.
Not permitted: Lip gloss with strong colour, artificial nails, nail extensions, excessive perfume or body spray.
A simple, neutral lip balm may be permitted where necessary.

Nails

Fingernails must be short, clean and well-maintained.
Nail polish is not permitted.
Acrylic, gel, artificial or press-on nails are not permitted.
Nail extensions are not permitted.
Students must not wear excessively long nails.

Jewellery & Accessories

Students should keep jewellery to a minimum.
Not permitted: Bracelets, bangles, anklets, excessive fashion accessories.
For girls, small, simple stud earrings may be permitted.
For boys, earrings and other visible body piercings should not be worn.

School Uniform (Monday–Wednesday)

Students must wear the approved Silverdale School Lagos uniform according to the school timetable.
Regular Uniform: Approved school shirt, school blazer, approved school tie, school hat, approved trousers for boys, approved pleated skirt for girls, plain black socks, approved black school shoes.
Important: Socks must be plain black—no stripes, logos or designs. Shoes must be black and appropriate for school. Uniforms must not be altered without approval. Shirts must be properly tucked in where required. Ties must be properly worn and positioned. School hats must be worn as directed. The Silverdale School crest/name must remain in its approved position and must not be covered or altered.

Sportswear (Thursday)

The approved sportswear must be worn only on designated sports days (Thursday).
Students must wear: Approved Silverdale sports shirt, approved sports shorts, approved white socks, appropriate sports sneakers.
Sportswear rules: Sportswear must be clean and properly fitted. Sports socks are plain white, with no stripes or logos. Sneakers must be suitable for physical activity. Students should not substitute sportswear with personal clothing. The sportswear design is applicable to both male and female students across the four houses: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and Topaz.

Tracksuit (Thursday)

The approved Silverdale School tracksuit is the same for male and female students.
Students must: Wear the complete approved tracksuit. Keep the tracksuit clean and properly fitted. Wear appropriate sneakers with the tracksuit. Avoid slippers, sandals, Crocs or inappropriate footwear. Ensure the school badge remains visible and unobstructed.

Friday Wear (Friday)

The approved Friday wear consists of the Silverdale School pink polo shirt, paired with plain blue jeans or plain black jeans, and white sneakers.
Friday wear rules: Jeans must be plain and modest. No ripped, torn, distressed or excessively faded jeans. No skinny jeans that are excessively tight. No shorts or skirts unless specifically approved. White sneakers should be clean and appropriate. The approved school polo must be worn properly with the badge visible.

Underwear & Modesty

Students are expected to dress modestly at all times.
Underwear must be worn appropriately and must not be visible through or outside the uniform.
Students should wear appropriate undergarments beneath light-coloured shirts.
Skirts must be worn at the approved school length (no rolling, folding, or excessively shortening).
Shirts, trousers and skirts must not be deliberately altered to create an inappropriate fit.

Shoes

Regular School Shoes: Must be plain black, clean and polished where applicable. No brightly coloured shoes. No trainers/sneakers with regular formal uniform unless authorised.
Sports/Tracksuit: Appropriate sports sneakers are required.
Friday Wear: White sneakers are required.

Socks

Regular Uniform: Plain black socks only (no stripes, no logos, no patterns, no bright colours).
Sportswear: Plain white socks only (no stripes, no logos, no patterns).

Tattoos & Body Modifications

Visible tattoos are not permitted.
Students must not obtain new visible tattoos while enrolled in the school.
Visible body modifications or excessive body piercings are not permitted.
Any existing situation requiring special consideration should be discussed with the school administration.

Perfume & Personal Hygiene

Students are expected to maintain excellent personal hygiene.
Students should bathe regularly and use appropriate deodorant.
Perfume and body spray, where used, must be mild and not excessive (avoid strong fragrances disturbing others).
Uniforms should be washed regularly. Clean hair, teeth and hands. Good oral hygiene expected.

Headwear

Only approved school headwear may be worn with the formal school uniform (approved school hat worn as directed).
Fashion caps, bonnets, durags, beanies and other personal headwear are not permitted during regular school hours unless authorised.
Religious or medically necessary head coverings should be handled respectfully in accordance with school policy.

Eyewear

Prescription glasses are permitted with frames appropriate for school.
Sunglasses should not be worn indoors or during lessons unless medically required.
Fashion glasses without prescription should not be used as a fashion accessory during school hours.

Personal Items & Fashion Accessories

Students should avoid bringing unnecessary fashion accessories to school, including fashion sunglasses, large handbags, excessive jewellery, fashion belts, large hair accessories, excessive bracelets, fashion chains, unapproved caps or hats.
Only items required for school activities should be brought to school.

Appearance During School Events

The same standards apply when students are attending excursions, participating in competitions, representing the school, attending assemblies, participating in external activities, attending school ceremonies, and taking photographs for school publications.
Students representing Silverdale School are expected to maintain a professional appearance that reflects positively on the school.
